PREVIEW: THE SADIES @ BILTMORE CABARET – JUN 29 2011

by R Khayatte

Canadian psych-country rockers The Sadies will be performing live at The Biltmore Cabaret on June 29th as part of their latest tour promoting their 2010 release Darker Circles.  The Sadies are notoriously reputed as musicians’ musicians.  Celebrating their technical prowess and virtuosic chops whilst still maintaining haunting melodies and inspired lyrics; these Toronto natives should prove a fantastic live experience.  As noted in an interview on Planets Magazine, “We really enjoy playing in theatres — it’s a different atmosphere, and if they have great sound it’s really a great way for us to perform, and we spend a lot of time on the smaller details.”  And yes, this ebb and flow grit explosion should translate magically at our very own Biltmore Cabaret.

Guitarist brothers Dallas and Travis Good, drummer Mike Belitsky and bassist Sean Dean were recently nominated for a Polaris prize in 2010 that has garnered the quartet much notoriety across Canada. Although The Sadies are not a mainstream act, their songwriting skills have definitely shone through with this latest record.

Darker Circles is a difficult album to peg down stylistically.  From Nashville style guitar picking and train shuffles in Postcards to moody laidback psychedelic tracks like Cut Corners; The Sadies keep you guessing with their electric guitar whirlwinds, playful arpeggios, and mini tornadoes.  Should be a great night so don’t miss it.
