I’m not exactly an expert when it comes to hip hop. My knowledge of that scene extends about as far as the average Pitchfork-reading schlub. Basically, I have a lot of albums by Wu-Tang Clan and its subsidiaries on my iPod. This inadequacy of knowledge makes me a laughing stock amongst my other white, middle class friends, who all seem to be far more informed than me. What I’m really trying to say here is that there are very few rappers who come here that I know well enough to get excited about by mention alone. So when I saw a Facebook event for Mickey Avalon at Fortune Sound Club on March 16th to support a long-awaited new album, I got more stoked than I had in the past year for an MC.
Avalon is an LA based rapper who dropped his debut album 5 years ago, getting some attention for raunchy songs like Jane Fonda and My Dick. He’s not exactly the most verbose or nimble spitter of rhymes, but his music tends to have a dark wit about it, as well as samples that go a bit heavier than a lot of other rappers. I almost saw him a couple of summers ago when he opened for Snoop Dogg, but, again, I was behind the eight ball and had no idea who he was until the day after the show (which was amazing, if only because it was the first time I had seen an entire arena hot boxed).
This time around, I am all over this. I’ll be able to finally see the man who turned Jane Fonda’s name into a colloquialism for skankiness. And with the power of Fortune’s ridiculous sound system behind him, I’m expecting a hard-hitting evening of lechery. See you there.
