I dig The Black Lips. Makes me a little self-conscious to admit affection like that, but I don’t care. It’s not because they continue to be trendy as shit. It’s because they’re one of the only bands I’ve seen that can make a bunch of those apathetic “cool kids” throw themselves around like pre-teens at a rec hall punk show.
When the Black Lips played The Commodore Ballroom with Deerhunter a couple of years back, I had an epically fun time, though all I remember are tequila shots, flying bodies, a guy dressed like Pancho Villa and working the next day with a massive hangover. Oh yeah, and that overwhelming feeling you get with seeing a stupidly good show. As these guys are far too often the delinquent garage rock soundtrack to a wild and boozy evening, I would expect nothing less than a similar outcome to my last encounter when the Black Lips play the Commodore yet again on June 15th.
With hardcore purveyors Cerebral Ballzy and local garage denizens Indian Wars opening, count on there being a bunch of airborne skinny white dudes to go with your booze, blow or other bad decisions the Black Lips inspire you to. There’s no better way to really kick off summer.
