PHONE INTERVIEW: WE ARE THE IN CROWD – JUL 22 2011

by Lenfant Von

For my first ever phone interview, I got the pleasure of talking one of the coolest and most down to earth female lead singers, Tay Jardine of We Are The In Crowd. We talked about their upcoming tour and new album as well as the weirdest merch they’ve ever put out and what it’s like being in a band with guys.

Ingrid L’enfant Von (SCENE): Hey Tay! How’s it going?

Tay Jardine: It’s good. How are you?

SCENE: I’m good. This is Ingrid by the way.

Tay: Hey!

SCENE: When’s the tour with All Time Low start?

Tay: That one starts the 27th in Virginia so in a few days but you know it’s going to be really fun.

SCENE: Have you met them yet?

Tay: Yah we met with them a few times in different festivals and stuff like that and then we also have the same management as them so we kinda keep close ties that way so it’s kinda nice. But although we just got off tour with Mayday Parade and they’ll be on that tour so it’ll be a nice little family reunion.

SCENE: Well that’s cute! So you guys got your new album coming out too right?

Tay: Yah yup.

SCENE: When does that come out?

Tay: It will come out the first week of October. We don’t have like a set date yet. I think we’re going to be announcing all of that fairly soon, in the next week or so.

SCENE: Alright. Is there a specific reason behind the name Love is Hopeless?

Tay: Wait that’s not our title. (Laughs)

SCENE: Oh really?

Tay: Yah I know I think that’s Hopeless Records they uh put out a CD every year called like Love is Hopeless.

SCENE: Oh okay. Whoops!

Tay: No no it’s okay. You’re not so far off but no, our title hasn’t been released yet either. All that stuff is kind of waiting until, I think the 26th is the date.

SCENE: Of next month?

Tay: No no no of this, yah of next week.

SCENE: Do you have a favorite song from the album yet?

Tay: I do! I actually I love all of them but the first one we’re coming out with is called Rumor Mill and it comes out on the 26th and that’s definitely one of my favorites and then there’s also a slower song called You’ve Got It Made and I think those are probably my two favorites right now. I don’t know, I might change my mind in like a month. (Laughs)

SCENE: Are you guys gonna come out with a music video for them?

Tay: Yah I think so. I think um I think after the All Time Low’s dates we should be shooting a music video for one of the songs soon so.

SCENE: That’s cool. So what’s it like being the only girl in a band?

Tay: Umm I guess it’s fine. I mean I don’t know what it’s like being in a band full of all girls or something so I don’t know I mean like whenever you know I’m having my girl moments when I’m kind of really emotional or ha whatever it is you know the guys are always really respectful. They give me my space if I need it. Other than that we all hang out, we’re best friends so it’s fine.

SCENE: Do you ever find yourself playing video games or anything like that?

Tay: I find myself trying to play video games. I’m awful at every video game except for Fifa. I’ve learned that I’m pretty good at that. But anytime like Call Of Duty, any of those games I don’t know what I’m doing. I can’t even like direct the control with the person. It’s awful.

SCENE: What do you think is the weirdest piece of merch you guys would ever try to sell?

Tay: Umm the weirdest? One time we had all like all of our stuff from our merch was all extra larges and we had like 200 of the shirts left and we didn’t know what to do with them and cause nobody was buying extra larges shirts so I spent like a week cutting them into different designs and then we sold them and it was like we called it the WATIC Chop Shop and sold all of them doing that so it was pretty cool. But that was probably the weirdest thing we’ve ever done.

SCENE: Well that’s cool. So I was reading on Wikipedia that your guys’ Myspace got hacked back in the day.

Tay: Yah.

SCENE: What was that like?

Tay: That sucked! It was uh, I mean Myspace was a really really important part you know, then, for bands to connect to their fans with and we had just started so it was like the only thing we had you know? It was kind of the only way we were reaching out to people and this was before we even started touring, so yah it was definitely a really really hard hit on us but Absolutepunk.net helped us out by posting um posting yah-know to brag about us and helping us out and then Hopeless (Records) found us through there so were actually pretty lucky getting our Myspace hacked.

SCENE: Yah! Got some good out of it. Did you guys know the guy or anything?

Tay: Yah we did. Yah! I mean eventually we found out who it was but it was just like and I mean at this point it’s just like “alright cool man you got your laughs but thanks for doing it because in the long run we won so.”

SCENE: Yah. Alright well I think that’s all the questions I got so far. Thanks a bunch!

Tay: Alright great. Thank you!
