It had been far too long since I have seen a concert at The Media Club. Luckily, that streak ended this past weekend when I got to see The Belle Game perform live. Since the SCENE Team was in attendance with audio, video, and camera gear you’ll soon be able to see and hear how the concert went…Until then you must rely on my words, and our photo gallery.
I had the pleasure of interviewing a few of the band members prior to the concert so I got to know them a bit before they took the stage. The first thing I noticed was that both female members present for the interview were wearing matching black dresses. The coordinated fashion matching may be the beginning of a new trend for the two at all live shows. Let’s hope they wash them between shows.

The weather turned out well for my first-ever concert at Malkin Bowl… In fact, it was perfect. Clear sunny skies without the sweltering heat.
Vampire Weekend lead singer Ezra Koenig would later affirm this, pausing between songs to chat with the crowd with his trademark charm.
“I’d say the weather today is PERFECT for a concert, wouldn’t you?” he asked. And the crowd responded enthusiastically.
The show began much earlier then we were used to, and we missed the Dum Dum Girls set at 6:00pm, which is too bad since I’ve been hearing good things about them. Here’s hoping they return to Vancouver and hit The Biltmore soon.

I will admit, with not a shred of shame, that I dig on the disco. I love me some good synth slap bass and the mid song spoken-word breakdown. I love the overt and sequined sexuality and the blatant ripping off of every solid variety of music that has ever existed. I believe disco led us to New Wave, which, like it or not, led us to some pretty important pop, rock, and industrial music. It not only had its place, but it was well produced and had at times some pretty serious rhythm. I dig.

The National are one of those solid bands that offers something just different enough to be inspiring yet not too off the radar to lose a solid and varied audience. Since 2001, they have been releasing regular work, in a catalogue that embraces an evolving sound and touches a deep part of alt-folk-rock very seldom explored, especially in the mainstream.

I will never get tired of saying “Venue was the venue for a great concert recently”. This time around, the Granville Street Hot Spot was the venue for the rock trio Autolux. A rather large crowd on hand on a Sunday night proved that live-music isn’t dead in this city, you just have to know when and where to find it.
Dressed in all-black the 2 male and 1 female trio took the stage shortly after 9:30 and played a impressive 90 minute set. The first thing I noticed about the band was that the bass & electric guitars had duct tape covering the main bodies. I’m not to sure if the Red Green inspired look was purely aesthetic or not, but it had me intrigued. But we all know that the look of your instruments means very little if you don’t know how to use them. Autolux definitely knows how to utilize their instruments and wide variety of pedals, knobs and buttons.
